Recognized for his versatility, DR. SHUENDA WONG has performed as a pianist in solo recitals, concertos, chamber ensembles and orchestras. He obtained master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the UK and Germany (full scholarship at Guildhall School of Music, high distinction at Staatliche Hochschule Freiburg). He won many awards, such as the Kobler Trust Award, the Barbara Stringer Scholarship, the HSBC Classics Bursary, the HSBC Piano Competition, the MYOF Scholarship, the Patron Award, and the Raymond Fox Bursary from the Making Music Association UK. He was a prize winner in International Piano competitions in the UK (Oxford Music Festival, Royal Overseas League, Haverhill Sinfonia), France (Lagny Sur Marne), Germany (Arthur Lepthien), Netherlands (Enschede), and Thailand (Mahidol International), he was also nominated for the Malaysian BOH Cameronian Arts Award, Kenneth Loveland Award, UK and Prestige Magazine Top 40 Young Talents Award.
Notable performances include concerts at the Kaisersaal Freiburg, Elzacher Stadthalle in Germany, Salle Ravel Paris, France, Bunkamura Hall and Miyagi Museum of Art in Japan, Kasteel Terworm in Holland, Hong Kong City Hall, collaborations with the MPO and Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the opening of the British Commonwealth Games, the Asian Pacific Cooperation Meeting and The Philippines Centennial Independence in Manila, recitals for the Brunei Music Society, Cambodia Music Society, Indonesia Trinity Music Festival, Surabaya Ravel Piano Festival, Shanghai University of Commerce, and Nanjing Conservatory of Arts, China. In the UK, he has performed in Purcell Room Southbank Centre, St Martin-in-the-fields, St James Piccadilly, the Barbican Hall London, ROSL House Edinburg, Princess Alexandra Hall London, and Erin Arts Centre Isle of Man, amongst other venues.
Dr. Wong is also a dedicated music educator. Previous positions include adjunct lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Trinity College London presenter for Asia, Head of Piano at Bentley Music Academy and Master Tutor at the British Academy of Performing Arts. His students have won many International Piano Competitions and performed worldwide. (e.g., at Royal Albert Hall UK, Carnegie Hall USA and Salle Cortot France). They also won many awards in national piano competitions and received high scorer’s awards for ABRSM and Trinity College London Diploma exams.Dr. Wong has adjudicated in countless music competitions and festivals around Asia.
Apart from the piano, Dr. Wong’s broad skill-set also encompasses music theory and history, music analysis, aural and musicianship skills, early childhood music education, violin, cello, erhu, vocal, orchestra, choir, conducting, composition, improvisation, contemporary music, multiple languages and social science research (music education philosophies and psychologies). He successfully obtained a Ph.D. in Music Education from Liberty University, USA. Currently, he is a Steinway Teacher and Educational Partner and he was recently appointed Senior Lecturer at INTI International University.
