Mustafa Fuzer Nawi

Born in Ipoh, Perak, Mustafa Fuzer began his music education in violin with Abdul Fatah Karim, under the music education programme of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. A recipient of a Malaysian Government Scholarship, Mustafa Fuzer furthered his studies in violin at the Hochschule fuer Muzik und Theater, Germany from 1986 to 1991 with Oscar C. Yatco. Upon his return to Malaysia, he was appointed Concert Master of the Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra in 1993, a post he held until 1997.

During this period, Mustafa Fuzer was actively involved in numerous orchestra and chamber music programmes, and was instrumental in the formation of the group Camerata Kuala Lumpur. He was also invited to join the Colonge Chamber Orchestra in 1996, where he made recording and toured several cities in Germany and France under the baton of Helmut Mueller Bruehl.

In 1997, Mustafa Fuzer was awarded Cultural Grant from the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism to pursue conducting for two years at the Conservatorium Hogelschool Enschede in Holland, where he studied orchestra and ensemble conducting under Kerry Woodwards and choral conducting under Kees Stolwijk.

Since 1999, Mustafa Fuzer has been appointed Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra, and has since received great acclaim for his work in Kuala Lumpur. This had led to the extraordinary collaboration with the Yayasan Seni Berdaftar where Mustafa Fuzer has been appointed the Conductor and Music Director of the International Piano Festival at Istana Budaya for five seasons (2000-2004). His close collaborations with the German Embassy and the Goethe Institute has brought several memorable concerts with German Soloists and Artists.

As a guest conductor, Mustafa Fuzer has worked with many orchestras. He assisted Andrea Quinn at the Commenwealth Youth Orchestra Week, during the 1998 Commenwealth Games held in Malaysia. He has also conducted several orchestras throughout Holland and Germany. In March 2000, he conducted the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas. Mustafa Fuzer also has conducted at the Singapore Esplanade, leading the Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra at the Asian Orchestra Week 2004 in Tokyo, Japan and the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra Bosnia in 2004. In 2003 Mustafa Fuzer was invited to work with Maestro Vladimir Kaminski at the Sydney Opera Company Australia. His highly acclaimed operatic conductor appearing with the Lyric Opera Malaysia amongst others, Puccinifs Tosca premiered at the Istana Budaya in July 2003 and Franz Leharfs Merry Widow in 2004.

Mustafa Fuzer has also established a national reputation as a teacher of violin and conducting. His many distinctions include guest at the local universities such as UiTM, UPM, ASWARA and UiSC. In 2008 Mustafa Fuzer was awarded Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) for his distinguished service for the development of music in Malaysia.
