Ivan Torres

After graduating in 1996 from Barcelona’s Conservatorio Superior de Musica del Liceu, Ivan Torres furthered his studies at Royal College of Music in London, England as a Foundation Scholar (full scholarship). His cello teachers were Alexander Boyarsky and Leonid Gorokhov, and with their guidance he completed his Bachelor Bmus(with Hons) and Post Graduate Solo Recitalist with Distinction, also winning the Kit & Lambert and Anna Shuttleworth awards for solo cello.  After finishing his studies at the Royal College of Music he went to further his studies in HFK Bremen under Alexander Baillie.

He has been a laureate of the IMS Prussia Cove 2000, Weikersheim Jeunesses Musicales (Chamber music), STAGE la Caixa, and Pablo Casals’s Foundation, as well as numerous awards from the Spanish and Catalan ministries of education. His playing was shaped and enriched by masterclasses with Artemis String Quartet, Endellion String Quartet, Chilinguirian string Quartet, Solomon Piano Trio, Timothy Hugh, Charles Tunnell, Steven Doane, Natalia Gutman, Patrick Demenga.

Ivan has been principal cello of Jeunesses Musicales World Youth Orchestra, London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and went on to perform with almost all of the major orchestras in Spain including the Orquesta Sinfonica y Nacional de Catalunya (Barcelona), Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia (La Coruna), Orquesta Ciudad de Granada , Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife (Canary Islands) and the Orquesta de la Comunitat Valenciana (Palau de les Arts). He has worked under renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti and Lorin Maazel. He was also professor of cello and chamber music professor at Conservatorio Superior de Musica del Liceu until 2007.

Ivan is teaching cellists of all ages and abilities from very different parts of the world such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Macau among others. He performs regularly and at the moment is based in Malaysia and regularly performs solo and chamber music in Dewan Philharmonik, Kuash Theatre, No Black tie and BoboKL. His last performance was at Johor Bahru Classical Music Festival 2017, through the Spanish and French Embassy, together with The Japan Foundation. Ivan has also served as an adjuticator of UM final exams and as a  jury member for several international competitions such as Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute Music PGVIM 2017, or Euroasia String Competition. Finally Ivan has given  Masterclasses and Workshops in Spain, Thailand and in Malaysia to Permata Seni Muzik.
